Frequently Asked Questions

Is sending a legal notice compulsory before going to court?

Only in certain cases, such as cheque bounce complaints and suits against the government (Section 80 CPC requires 2 months’ notice). In other cases it is optional but often useful.

What should I do if I receive a legal notice?

Do not ignore it. Note the deadline, keep the documents, and send a considered reply through a lawyer.

Does a will need to be registered?

No, registration is optional. A will must be signed by the person making it and attested by two witnesses.

Should a rent agreement be registered?

A lease for more than one year must be registered under Section 17 of the Registration Act, 1908. This is why many rent agreements are made for 11 months.
